The Princess

Allow me to introduce The Princess, my DNJ (dear niece J), daughter of my youngest sister. She was born a little under two years ago, but in this pic she's not even a day old. See that baby fuzz? And the puffy eyes? This was only one of a few shots I managed to get before she started crying (loudly, if I might add) for food.
She's gracing this blog today because her mom commissioned (commanded, more like) me to make The Princess some tutus. Not a tutu, but tutus. Plural. She already has a store-bought one but The Princess apparently needs a wardrobe. Not just a single outfit.
Having three boys and no daughter can really cramp up a mother's crafting inspiration. Don't misunderstand -- I love my boys, they inspire me to the heavens, and I wouldn't swap them for anything in the world. But. A daughter is a totally different experience. It's quite obvious. Dress a boy in frills and lace and ribbons , and you could be setting him up for years of therapy. Unless he wants to, of course, but then again, he might still need therapy for other things. But I digress.
Sewing for boys is just not the same as sewing for girls. I don't own a serger or overlock machine, so I can't sew tshirts, and that's all boys will ever wear. I made them khaki cargo pants when they were small, wish I could find pictures of that. And even then, there simply was no time to sew. They had schoolwork, there was housework, I was a mess most of the time they were growing up. They were a handful.
But now they can take care of themselves, and I can do a little sewing for a little princess whom I am not taking care of. Last night I finished making one. My first ever. I'll be posting it as soon as I can take a photo.
I had great fun, and for sure I'll be making another.
